Founded in 2006, Girls Think Tank (“GTT”) is a grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit organization comprised of women and men dedicated to building a progressive base in San Diego and achieving social justice on local issues confronting us in our daily lives. GTT has focused primarily on people with inadequate housing and violence against women. GTT has also worked on youth empowerment with a leadership academy at Lincoln High School.

GTT has emerged as a leader among progressive organizations in San Diego, particularly on the critical needs faced by individuals and families who lack adequate shelter in the downtown area. For example, GTT founded the Basic Dignity Coalition locally to address access to basic human needs for those struggling to survive on the city streets. Just last month, the San Diego City Council voted unanimously to earmark $700,000 for restroom facilities downtown as a result of the recently launched Basic Dignity Campaign by GTT.

GTT is now poised to expand its programmatic reach in San Diego. To this end, GTT is seeking an Executive Director to develop grants and funding sources, build capacity, oversee its day-to-day operations, and help facilitate its volunteer-run programs.

Position Summary:

GTT’s Executive Directorship a part-time position (30+ hours) for with potential for a full-time salary if subsequent funding so allows. Under the direction of the Board of Directors and the Advisory Board, and in collaboration with GTT’s community partners and members, the Executive Director will have primary responsibility for building this start-up grassroots group into a well-funded, effective non-profit organization which will be better positioned for increasingly greater impact and programmatic reach.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, create and implement a fundraising strategy to include grant writing and development of multiple funding streams
  • Oversee day-to-day operations and report to the Board of Directors regarding same
  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, increase visibility of GTT and its programmatic goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners
  • Help coordinate and facilitate GTT’s volunteer-run projects and events
  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, help prepare a budget and ensure that GTT operates within its budget and implements sound financial practices
  • Jointly, with the Board of Directors, conduct official correspondence and execute legal documents.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to social justice and the mission of the GTT;
  • Team player who enjoys and excels at working collaboratively with others;
  • Highly organized, with ability to follow through with complex tasks and to establish strategies and action plans to achieve targeted objectives within set timeframes;
  • Fundraising experience; and
  • Some media or public relations experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in building non-profit organizations;
  • Flexible schedule (to allow for evening or weekend meetings);
  • Advanced speaking and writing skills;
  • Experience in developing or implementing strategies for social justice change (through work in philanthropy, social justice nonprofits, or organizing campaigns);
  • Familiarity with web-based and digital media tools for communication and visibility, such as using a Content Management System (CMS)
  • Demonstrated fundraising success;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment, prioritize projects, and use initiative
  • Able to thrive in a start-up, fast-paced environment.
