San Diego, CA (Jan. 22, 2010) – The Girls Think Tank (GTT) is proud to announce that Jennifer Douglas has accepted the position of Executive Director. Under the direction of GTT’s Board of Directors and Advisory Board, and in collaboration with community partners and members, Douglas has primary responsibility for the execution of GTT’s overall mission as well as daily operations. “The hiring of Jennifer as our first Executive Director signals an incredible turning point for our organization – we are poised to soar in 2010, expanding our programs and reach,” said GTT’s founder and president, Rachel Jensen.

“I am thrilled to serve Girls Think Tank and its dedicated boards, volunteers, and donors. Here’s to a productive 2010, filled with thinking, planning, and doing – what GTT is known for best,” said Douglas. She will work part-time at GTT’s new offices downtown.

Since joining the GTT Board of Directors last year, Douglas has been closely involved with the development of a campaign arising from GTT’s Homeless Coalition. She said, “The Basic Dignity campaign will address basic human rights, which is in jeopardy not only in far-off countries, but right here in America’s Finest City. In downtown San Diego, the homeless have inadequate access to drinking water and to bathrooms open 24/7, violating fundamental human rights and creating a public health issue.”

Douglas brings to GTT almost 20 years of marketing, communications and project management experience in the nonprofit, governmental, and corporate sectors. As a writer and producer at CNN and local news organizations in Washington, D.C., she covered everything from crimes and neighborhood meetings to press conferences and Capitol Hill hearings – gaining perspective on the communication of community and national issues. At the Center for Science in the Public Interest, Douglas worked on a campaign to improve the healthfulness of food in school vending machines and lunches. Board member Helen Zeldes added, “Jennifer’s limitless energy is contagious, and she is 100% committed to social justice.” Douglas graduated from the University of Michigan in 1986 with a BA in English Language and Literature, and studied graduate Community Health Education/Advocacy at Hunter College in New York City. Jennifer and her husband Joe Vettel have two young children and live in Scripps Ranch.

GTT is so lucky to have Jennifer Douglas. She worked for me as a television producer and writer on a health show on The Discovery Channel and public broadcasting for several years as well as many other jobs including co-writing a book. Is she good? You bet she is. Smart, energetic, brave, has scruples and integrity and she makes and reaches her long term goals. Jen works hard, is determined and great fun to be around. She doesn’t suffer fools gladly but never holds a grudges. She’s kept her friends and admirers (I’m one) for decades. You always know what she thinks and there isn’t a sneaky bone in her body. Plus, whatever there is to do, Jen knows how to get it done. As I said, lucky GTT.

I have known Jennifer since we were interns for Ralph Nader more than two decades ago. During that time and ever since, Jennifer has demonstrated a relentless passion to pursue justice and opportunity for those in need. Coupled with her deep intellect, Jennifer is an incredible energetic force. GTT and the community are fortunate to have such a powerful advocate. I look forward to hearing about your shared achievements.
